6 Monate in Südafrika, die wir nie mehr vergessen werden
Südafrika war mit Sicherheit eine der prägendsten Erfahrungen im Leben unserer Freiwilligen Michael Schweizer und Yannik Rittmann. Im März 2014 flogen sie nach Kapstadt und unterstützten das Vrygrond Community Lab (VCL) für knapp sechs Monate. Für ihre Arbeit möchten wir uns herzlichst bedanken und freuen uns, dass uns beide in Deutschland in wichtigen Positionen erhalten bleiben. Lest selbst was die Beiden zu berichten haben:
Wir waren also auf dem Weg nach Südafrika, der „Regebogennation“. Unseren Aufenthalt können wir nur schwer in Worte fassen. Es war eine der besten und wertvollsten Erfahrungen die wir bis hier her gemacht haben. Aber beginnen wir doch mit unserer Freiwilligenarbeit:
Der größte Erfolg, den wir während unserer Arbeit erzielen konnten, war sicherlich die Einstellung des jetzigen Lab Administrators Mike Mwamba, der im Township Vrygrond lebt und überall bekannt und beliebt ist. Für uns war klar, dass der langfristige Erfolg des VCL Projekts nur gesichert werden kann, wenn das Management des Labs von einer Person vor Ort übernommen wird.

Während unserer Arbeit als Freiwllige übernahmen wir die VCL Basic Kurse, die in vier Wochen Grundkenntnisse über Microsoft Office, Internet & Co. vermitteln. Vor allem hier konnten wir auf die Unterstützung von Mike vertrauen, der bereits seit mehreren Jahren leidenschaftlich unterrichtet und die Leute während seines Unterrichts auf einzigartige Weise motiviert und weiterbringt. Auch neben den Unterrichtseinheiten waren wir und Mike vor Ort um als Ansprechpartner bei Bewerbungsfragen, Erstellung von Lebensläufen sowie allgemeinen Fragen über Computerkenntnisse zu unterstützen. Doch zu Aufgabe des Lab Management zählen nicht nur die VCL Basic Kurse, denn mehrere NGOs des Bildungszentrum Vrygrond Community Center greifen auf das Lab zurück. So brachten wir uns ebenfalls in weitere Kurse ein und übernahmen Bewerbungstrainings für Communiversity und Computerkurse für Fit4Life. Diese beiden NGOs kümmern sich in sogenannten Life Skill Trainings um junge Schulabbrecher, um sie durch Theorie- sowie auch Praxiskurse auf das spätere Arbeitsleben vorzubereiten. Im späteren Verlauf unseres Aufenthalts wurde sogar ein Fortgeschrittenenkurs, der von der Mentec Foudation gesponsert. Dieser lehrte erweiterte Kenntnisse in Microsoft Office und schulte die Teilnehmer im Bewerbungstraining. Während unserer Arbeit freundeten wir uns mit den Angestellten des Vrygrond Community Centers an, die ebenfalls im Township leben. So lernten wir das alltägliche Leben im Township auf eine einmalige Art und Weise kennen und verbrachten viel Zeit mit gemeinsamen Grillenabenden, was in Südafrika auch Braai genannt wird, vielen spannenden Touren durch die Viertel von Vrygrond und Khayelitsha und lernten sogar das aufregende Nachtleben bei einem Festival, im mit 1,8 Millionen Einwohner größten Township Khayelitsha, kennen.
Doch dass das Leben im Township nicht immer schön ist und oft von Gewalt, Drogen und Verbrechen beeinflusst wird, haben wir auch miterlebt. So gab es während unseres Aufenthalts innerhalb des Townships einen Bandenkrieg zwischen verschiedenen Taxiunternehmen, der in brutale Schusswechsel ausartete und in zwei Wochen mehrere Menschen das Leben kostete. In dieser Zeit war das Unterrichten leider nicht möglich und das Vrygrond Community Center schloss seine Türen für mehrere Tage. Doch auch ein nächtlicher Einbruch ins Lab kurz vor unserer Rückreise der, bei dem mehrere Computer, Bildschirme und Ausrüstüng gestohlen wurde, konnte unsere sonst so positiven Erfahrungen nicht trüben. Denn kurz darauf wurde ein Unternehmen gefunden, dass Computer und Ausrüstung sponsorte, sodass bereits nach wenigen Tagen die Arbeit im Lab fortgesetzt werden konnte. Mit Sicherheit zählen die Erfahrungen, die wir während unserer Zeit im Township machten, zu den Wertvollsten überhaupt. Wir lernten eine völlig neue Welt kennen, in der Leute in ergreifender Armut leben, doch trotzdem stets versuchen, das Beste aus jeder Situation zu machen, nie die Motivation verlieren und jeden Tag ums reine Überleben kämpfen. Eine Vorstellung, die man sich als typischer Deutscher kaum vorstellen kann. Doch trotzdem herrscht ein solch starker Zusammenhalt, den wir selbst hautnah miterleben durften.
Auch neben unserer Arbeitszeit konnten wir unsere Zeit in Kapstadt sehr genießen. Sei es beim wöchentlichen Surfen in Muizenberg, auf der legendären Partymeile „Long Street“ in der Innenstadt Kapstadts, oder einfach nur beim Chillen an einen der schönsten Strände der Welt – Kapstadt hat wirklich für Jeden etwas zu bieten. Doch nicht nur auf das wünderschöne Kapstadt werden wir gerne zurückblicken, denn wir reisten zwei Wochen an der südlichen Küste von Südafrika entlang. Auf der sogenannten „Garden Route“ reisten sie wir einem Strand zum nächsten und auch das Programm wurde nie langweilig: Wir schwammen mit Robben, sahen Wale und Delfine beim Grillen am Strand, tauchten im Haikäfig, surften an der legendären Surferbucht von Jeffreys Bay und wagten den aus 219 m Höhe weltweit höchsten Bungee Sprung von einer Brücke. Doch das war noch längst nicht alles, denn anschließend ging es weiter in den Krüger Nationalpark, in dem wir bei einer einzigartig spannenden Safari die sogenannten „Big 5“ bestaunen durften.

So stand bereits kurz nach unserer Rückreise fest, dass dieser Aufenthalt in Südafrika mit Sicherheit nicht der letzte war, denn Südafrika ist nicht grundlos eines der schönsten und atemberaubendsten Länder der Welt. Diese 6 Monate werden wir wohl nie mehr vergessen!
