VRYGROND COMPUTER LAB

Giving opportunities to our community members to develop themselves by using IT

ABOUT THE VRYGROND COMPUTER LAB (VCL)

The Vrygrond Computer Lab was introduced in 2013 as a cooperation project between the University of Cape Town and the University of Pforzheim.

Equipped with 20 computers, the VCL’s strives to be an IT competence center with the purpose to create educational opportunities through skills training based on IT technology.

WHY THE VRYGROND COMPUTER LAB EXISTS

Poor education

Schools in underserved communities lack infrastructure and resources to provide high quality education. 78% are without libraries and do not have computers. (Unicef)

Lack of Skills

High number of school dropouts

Only 20% of population in Vrygrond and Lavender Hill, aged 20 years and older, have completed Grade 12 (2011 Census)

Poverty and Unemployment

75% of households earn less than R3200/month (200€). One-third of the labor-fource is unemployed (2011 Census)
