A world where income and background are no longer a barrier to opportunity for young people.

ABOUT BUILD UP KIDS

Build Up Kids is a scholarship program that funds school tuition for talented children from Lavender Hill to attend better-resourced high schools. Lavender Hill is home to an abundance of potential. Our goal is to eliminate the financial burden of a quality education for those willing to work towards it.

WHY BUILD UP KIDS EXISTS

Poor school performance reinforces inequality

The odds are heavily stacked against those from low income families because the quality of public schooling is highly variable. Grade 8 students attending fee-charging schools are up to 4 times more likely to qualify for university than those attending no-fee schools (Sunday Times South Africa)

Low income

59% of Lavender Hill households have a monthly income of R3,200 or less. Muizenberg High School costs over R15,000 each year to attend. (2011 Census) Therefore income is the number 1 reason why young people from Lavender Hill cannot attend better resourced schools.

Lack of Higher Education Role Models:

Not many young people living in townships dream of university, because not many people around these areas have gone to University. Only 1% of those aged 20 years and older have higher education (2011 Census)

Volatile environment

Many children experience a broken journey through school, interrupted by irregular attendance, absent teachers, teenage pregnancy and school-related abuse and violence (Unicef). Only 19% of those aged 20 years and older have completed Grade 12 or higher. (2011 Census)

Gang Activity

Lavender Hill is notorious for Gang violence. Many of the students we work with emphasize the difficulty studying in an environment with regular gang activity.

THE APPROACH OF BUILD UP KIDS

We aim to break the cycle of poverty, so that young people can pursue education in better resourced high schools, have the opportunity to attend university, pursue further training or obtain and maintain a good job.

Financial Support

To overcome the barrier of low income, Build up Kids funds school tuition, uniforms, learning materials, and transport to school.

Tutoring and Mentoring

We provide mentoring, leadership training and focus groups for the young people on our scholarship program to ensure that the children achieve their goals and fulfill their potential.

Safe & Stable Environment

Through Build up Kids, we are enabling children with huge potential to study in a safe and stable environment free of crime and gang violence.

Transport

The best schools are not in and around the Townships. Therefore, we make sure that the kids have a save way to school by providing transport from home to school in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon with our own school bus.

Cassidy

My name is Cassidy. I am in grade 7C. My favourite subject is Arts and Culture because it is really fun. I like to create things. I live with my mom and brother in Pelican Park. I love to play soccer. It keeps me busy and takes my mind off things. I would like to go to a better high school to better my education and get a good job. Education is important to me because I want to go to university and get a great job.

Kerchia.

My name is Kerchia. I am in grade 7B and am a Compass Trust scholarship recipient. My favourite subject is Maths because I am very good at it and find it very easy. I live with my mom, dad and sisters in Steenberg. I like to be outside and play netball. I also love to learn. I would like to go to a better high school so that I can learn more and do better in my school work. Education is important to me because it will help me to become something and to me that is very important

Rushana

My name is Rushana. I am in grade 7D and am a Compass Trust scholarship recipient. My favourite subjects are Afrikaans and Natural Science. I like Afrikaans because I like to write my own stories, and I like Natural Science because I enjoy learning about nature. I live with my mother and father in Lavender Hill. I love dancing and spending quality time with my family. I love to dance because it makes me feel happy. I would like to go to a better high school because I want to be successful and study hard to become something in life. Education is important to me because you need to be educated to have a job. It is very important for me to go to school.

Isabel

My name is Isabel and I am in grade 7A. My favourite subject is Maths because I really enjoy it and I am really good at it. I live with my parents and little sister at Military Heights in Lavender Hill. I really like to read because I find it calming and interesting. I would like to go to a better high school because I want to achieve something and buy my parents a house one day. Education is important to me because it will help me to get a job, and to live my dream one day.

My name is Anthonino . I am in grade 7C and am a Compass Trust scholarship recipient. My favourite subject is English because I am very good at it. I live with my parents and my sister in Village Heights in Lavender Hill. Outside of school, I like to play soccer because it is fun and keeps me busy. I like playing sport. I would like to go to a better high school so that I can become a better person and find a good job. Education is important to me because it will help me to find a good job one day and provide for my family.

My name is Mikyle. I am in grade 7D. My favourite subject is English because I love to read. I live with my mom, dad and brothers in Lavender Hill in Cape Town. My hobbies are playing soccer, swimming and playing cricket. I really enjoy these sports and find them really fun. I would like to go to a better high school because I do not want to be with the children in Lavender Hill. Education is important to me because without it, you will get nowhere in life and I want to achieve my goals.

My name is Tashwill and I am in grade 7. My favourite subject is Maths because I like to work with numbers and calculations. I live with my parents, brothers, and sisters in Lavender Hill. I like to play soccer because I like to run and I am also very fast. I want to go to a better High School because I want to better my future. My name is Anastasia. I am in grade 7D and I'm a Compass Trust scholarship recipient. My favourite subject is Maths because I enjoy it and I am good at it. I live with my mom in Lavender Hill. My name is Gaylin. I am in grade 7D, in the English class at Levana Primary. My favourite subject is Arts and Culture because it has lots of fun activities, like drama and drawing. I live with my parents and three siblings in Lavender Hill in Cape Town. One of my hobbies is dancing. I like to dance because it takes my mind off bad things. I also enjoy it because I can help people who need it, by tutoring them. I live with my grandmother, aunt and brother in Lavender Hill. I like to play netball with my friends and cousins. I enjoy it because it is fun and interesting. I would like to go to a better high school because I would like to become something that people wouldn’t think I could become. Other high schools also don’t offer all the subjects that I want and Cape Academy does. Education is important to me because it will help me to keep out of trouble. It will also help me to study further to become something in life and move out of the area that I live in, and take my family with me.

Nimat

My name is Nimat and I am in grade 7C. My favourite subject is Mathematics. I like it because I understand it and enjoy doing and sorting out problems. I live with my mom and dad in Lavender Hill. I like to play hand tennis and sometimes play with a skipping rope because I am really good at it. I would like to go to a better high school because I believe that the schools in Lavender Hill do not offer the subjects that I need. I need Science and pure Maths because I want to become a forensic scientist. Education is important to me because I see some children crying for something, and their mothers can’t give it to them. I want to be able to provide for my children.

Neben der Arbeit im Vrygrond Computer Lab bleibt unseren Freiwilligen in Kapstadt an den Wochenenden viel Zeit, um die Kaphalbinsel zu erkunden. Schon zum zweiten Mal fand die Verleihung des Welcome-Preises für studentische Projekte, die im Rahmen des DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) gefördert werden, statt.
